  4. The plain geometry of the dead does not equate
    Infinite numbers, untidy sums:
We believe in belief but don’t believe,
For which we shall be judged.

    Eye of Horus Fraction

You may be familiar with the Eye of Horus, one of the most well-known Egyptian symbols. However, have you ever thought about how the Eye of Horus relates to Math? The Egyptians actually attributed specific fractions to each of the six parts of the iconic symbol.

The inner corner of the eye indicates 1/2, the iris is 1/4, the eyebrow is 1/8, the outer corner of the eye is 1/16, and the decorations below the eye are 1/32 and 1/64 respectively. They were combined, in various ways, to measure the unit capacity for grains.

Read on to see what Esther Inglis-Arkell from io9 has to say about pictogram systems.

“The Fibonacci numbers are Nature’s numbering system. They appear everywhere in Nature, from the leaf arrangement in plants, to the pattern of the florets of a flower, the bracts of a pinecone, or the scales of a pineapple. The Fibonacci numbers are therefore applicable to the growth of every living thing, including a single cell, a grain of wheat, a hive of bees, and even all of mankind.”
